I. Background for Practice from Sciences and Humanities/Scientific Foundation (AACN, 2011)

As a master’s-prepared nurse, I demonstrated the importance of scientific findings from nursing, pathophysiology, genetics, public health, quality
improvement, and organizational sciences for the continual improvement
of nursing care across diverse settings (AACN, 2011, p.4). I met this competency by analyzing the pathophysiology of Crohn's disease, genetics, and ideals derived based on nursing theories.

APRNs have an advanced knowledge in sciences, humanities, and pathophysiology. I was able to meet essential one with my pathophysiology paper on Crohn's Disease. By providers seeking to advance their knowledge in fields such as pathophysiology, providers can better understand the path of disease and provide better treatment options for the future.

Crohn's Patho Paper

Understanding genetics helps providers determine pathways for disease and health promotion. I incorporated genetic evidence into providing patient care through obtaining a family history in my Advanced Health Assessment course.

Family History

Through obtaining a family history, I was able to advance my knowledge on genetics by doing a pedigree. By creating a family pedigree, providers can organize health information and recognize patterns of inheritance and potentially shared environmental risk factors.

Family Pedigree

Finally, I was able to meet essential one with my reflective philosophy based on how I define a world view. Through this assignment, I was able to reflect on the two world views of empiricism and humanism. I found that my outlook on life most closely resembles the humanism or perceived world view.  I would not be the nurse I am today without my humanistic world view and the way I personally view the four disciplines of the nursing metaparadigm. I truly believe healing cannot take place without these key concepts in the metaparadigm in nursing.

My Reflective Philosophy

Strengths
&
Weaknesses

My strengths in essential one include having an understanding of advanced pathophysiology and genetics. By having advanced knowledge, I was able to understand the etiology of a disease to help improve patient outcomes. By studying genetics, I was able to better predict disease and help to provide education based on health promotion.

My weaknesses include being able to reflect on my own nursing philosophy. This can prove difficult for many healthcare providers to relate nursing theory to evidenced based practice ideals. Through doing this assignment was able to see just how important the four disciplines of the nursing metaparadigm effect nursing culture.
