My Philosophy of Professional Masters Level Nursing Practice

After nine years of being a nicu nurse and working in outpatient pediatric gastroenterology, I made the decision to go back to school to become a pediatric nurse practitioner. I have always had a passion for pediatric nursing since the first time I stepped onto the floor as a nurse extern in my undergraduate program. Children are truly magically human beings. Their bodies may be small, but their fight and tenacity are huge. Our area of Northeast, Tennessee needs more pediatric trained APRNs, and I want more than anything to be able to give back to my community as an PNP. Our children are our future, and their healthcare should be top priority in our communities.

I have lived my life based on a bible verse from Esther 4:14. The verse states: “Perhaps this is the moment for which you have been created." I believe with all my heart that God put me on this earth to care for children. This is my philosophy of master's level nursing practice. I vow to always treat my patients and families with the upmost respect and indifference. I vow to always be that one provider who goes above and beyond for their patients through continuing education, adopting evidenced based practice into my practice, and being a strong advocate. Thinking back on my time during the PNP program at King University, I can say I met so many awesome kids that will forever leave an impact on my career. If I can improve the life of just one kid who is struggling whether that be with something simple such an ear infection or with a child diagnosed with cancer fighting for their lives: that's the meaning of being a provider. I have come to realize that the definition of a provider means more than just a healer. A provider is a friend, cheerleader, and most importantly the light that shines in the darkness during times when all hope is lost. This is the kind of pediatric nurse practitioner I want to strive to be to every single one of my patients.
